How to Find Volume from Density

When you know a substance's density and its total mass, finding the volume is a simple division.

The Formula

Volume (mL) = Mass (g) ÷ Density (g/mL)

Step-by-Step Example

Finding the volume of 200 g of honey (density 1.420 g/mL):

  1. Note the density: 1.420 g/mL
  2. Note the mass: 200 g
  3. Divide: 200 ÷ 1.420 = 140.85 mL

So 200 g of honey occupies 140.85 mL.

Divide the mass by the density: Volume = Mass ÷ Density. Make sure your units are consistent — grams divided by g/mL gives you milliliters.

No. Density tells you mass per unit volume but not the total amount. You need both the density and the total mass to calculate total volume. Think of density as a conversion factor, not a measurement by itself.

Flour has a much lower density (0.593 g/mL) compared to honey (1.420 g/mL). This means flour's particles are loosely packed with lots of air space, while honey is a thick, dense liquid. For the same mass, flour needs about 2.4× more volume than honey.

Divide kg/m³ by 1,000 to convert to g/mL. For example, water is 1,000 kg/m³ = 1.000 g/mL. Then use the formula normally: Volume (mL) = Mass (g) ÷ Density (g/mL).

The formula V = M/D works for gases, but gas density changes significantly with temperature and pressure. For accurate gas calculations, you should use the Ideal Gas Law (PV = nRT). This calculator is best suited for liquids and solids at standard conditions.
