How to Convert Mass to Volume
To find volume from mass, you need to divide the mass by the density. This is the reverse of volume-to-mass conversion.

Converting 5,000 mg of olive oil to milliliters:
- Identify the density of olive oil: 0.918 g/mL
- Multiply density by 1000: 0.918 Γ 1000 = 918 mg/mL
- Divide: 5,000 Γ· 918 = 5.446 mL
So 5,000 mg of olive oil = 5.446 mL.

Common questions about converting mass to volume.
Divide the mass by the substance's density. The formula is Volume = Mass Γ· Density. For milligrams to milliliters specifically, divide mg by (density in g/mL Γ 1000). For example, 2,000 mg of water Γ· (1.0 Γ 1000) = 2 mL.
Density is defined as mass per unit volume (D = M/V). When you solve for volume, you rearrange to V = M/D. Multiplication is used for volume-to-mass (the opposite direction). Think of it this way: if density tells you mass per mL, dividing total mass by mass-per-mL gives you the number of mL.
For medications, use the concentration on the label rather than density. If the label says "250 mg / 5 mL," then 500 mg = 10 mL. For pure substances (not solutions), use density: 500 mg of water = 0.5 mL, while 500 mg of honey = about 0.35 mL.
