To convert milligrams (mg) to milliliters (mL), you need to know the substance's density. The formula is: mL = mg ÷ (density × 1000). First, multiply the density (in g/mL) by 1000 to convert it to mg/mL, then divide your mg value by that number.

Only for pure water at standard temperature. Water's density is exactly 1.000 g/mL (or 1,000 mg/mL), meaning 1,000 mg perfectly occupies 1 mL of volume. For less dense substances like cooking oil, 1,000 mg will take up more than 1 mL (approx 1.09 mL).

For liquid medications, you must use the concentration stated on the bottle (e.g., "50 mg per 1 mL" or "250 mg / 5 mL") rather than the density of the liquid. If the concentration is 50 mg/mL and you need a 100 mg dose, you divide 100 by 50, which gives you a 2 mL volume.

Because you are converting from mass to volume. Density is "mass divided by volume" (m/V). So, if you know the mass and want the volume, you rearrange the formula to Volume = Mass ÷ Density. (Converting volume to mass uses multiplication).
