How to Convert mg to mL
Converting milligrams to milliliters is the reverse of the standard mL→mg conversion. You still need the substance's density, but this time you divide instead of multiply.
The Formula
Step-by-Step Example
Converting 5,000 mg of olive oil to milliliters:
- Identify the density of olive oil: 0.918 g/mL
- Multiply density by 1000: 0.918 × 1000 = 918 mg/mL
- Divide: 5,000 ÷ 918 = 5.446 mL
So 5,000 mg of olive oil = 5.446 mL.
If you need the opposite direction, use the milliliters to milligrams tool, or convert any mass into volume with the broader mass to volume converter. Because every result hinges on density, you can derive it with the density calculator or pull a ready value from the liquid density lookup. To start over from volume, return to the main mL to mg converter.
When Is mg to mL Useful?
This conversion is especially useful when:
- Pharmaceutical dosing — When a medication dose is given in mg but you need to measure it as a liquid.
- Lab work — When preparing solutions from a known mass.
- Cooking — When scaling recipes that mix mass and volume measurements.
- Nutrition — When calculating ingredient volumes from nutritional label weights.

mg to mL for Medication Dosages
When dealing with liquid medications, the conversion depends on the drug's concentration (mg/mL), not the liquid's density.
The Formula
Liquid medications come with a concentration printed on the label — for example, "50 mg/mL" or "250 mg/5 mL." To find how many milliliters you need for a given dose in milligrams, simply divide the prescribed dose (mg) by the concentration (mg/mL).

mg to mL FAQ
Common questions about converting milligrams to milliliters.
To convert milligrams (mg) to milliliters (mL), you need to know the substance's density. The formula is: mL = mg ÷ (density × 1000). First, multiply the density (in g/mL) by 1000 to convert it to mg/mL, then divide your mg value by that number.
Only for pure water at standard temperature. Water's density is exactly 1.000 g/mL (or 1,000 mg/mL), meaning 1,000 mg perfectly occupies 1 mL of volume. For less dense substances like cooking oil, 1,000 mg will take up more than 1 mL (approx 1.09 mL).
For liquid medications, you must use the concentration stated on the bottle (e.g., "50 mg per 1 mL" or "250 mg / 5 mL") rather than the density of the liquid. If the concentration is 50 mg/mL and you need a 100 mg dose, you divide 100 by 50, which gives you a 2 mL volume.
Because you are converting from mass to volume. Density is "mass divided by volume" (m/V). So, if you know the mass and want the volume, you rearrange the formula to Volume = Mass ÷ Density. (Converting volume to mass uses multiplication).
It depends entirely on the substance. For water, 500 mg is 0.5 mL. For honey (density ~1.42 g/mL), 500 mg takes up only 0.35 mL. For flour (density ~0.59 g/mL), 500 mg takes up about 0.85 mL.
